TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — As Japan’s current parliamentary session ends Wednesday, up to 30 Japanese legislators are planning to visit Taiwan, symbolizing the close relations between the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.
The groups of lawmakers, senior party officials, and local councilors will start arriving on Dec. 21, per CNA. The list of visitors includes former Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Hagiuda Koichi, former Justice Minister Suzuki Keisuke, and ex-Agriculture Minister Senator Takinami Hirofumi, whose spouse hails from Taiwan, the ministry said.
Hagiuda’s delegation plans to visit Taiwan from Dec. 21–23 and includes local councilors from his election district of Hachioji. He also serves as the current secretary-general of the Japan-ROC Diet Members’ Consultative Council.
Suzuki is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan on Dec. 22 for a three-day stay. As for Takinami, he played a crucial role in allowing Taiwanese to use the name of their country for household documents in Japan, the ministry said.
Tokyo places a high value on legislative diplomacy, showing a willingness to develop ties with Taiwan based on shared democratic values, according to the ministry. Taiwan is also planning to host a youth camp from Dec. 22–26 for 20 young politicians and legislative aides from Japan as part of a long-term program which has already seen 20 editions.
