TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — New Taipei's social welfare department on Sunday hosted an inclusive fashion show where 30 people with disabilities walked the runway.
CNA reported that the show took place at the New Taipei City Government Auditorium. The runway was put together with help from Fu Jen Catholic University, Taipei City University of Science and Technology, Hsing Wu University, and EeLin Entertainment.
New Taipei officials said participants ranged from 2 to 78 years old, and some used wheelchairs, canes, or guide sticks as they walked out. The city noted that each model showed designs by Taiwanese brands and received loud cheers from the crowd.
Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) said New Taipei has more than 180,000 residents with disabilities, the most in Taiwan. Hou said many of the models had never done a runway show before, but they still stepped up and pulled it off.
The mayor noted that the city held its first fashion runway for people with disabilities this year to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Hou said many participants were walking a runway for the first time in their lives, showing courage and a professional presence.
