TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Pingtung officials on Thursday issued a NT$800,000 (US$25,000) fine to a pig farm in Changzhi Township for feeding food waste to pigs, with officials later confirming no disease had spread.
The farm, which houses 215 pigs, was inspected on Nov. 26, per CNA. Officials found two barrels of food waste and two barrels of animal by-products on site.
The farm was fined NT$600,000 under the Act on the Prevention and Control of Infectious Animal Diseases and NT$200,000 under the Feed Control Act, per UDN.
Pingtung County Animal Disease Control Center issued a movement restriction order for all pigs and collected samples of pigs and food waste. Preliminary tests were negative for African swine fever, confirming no disease spread.
The Pingtung African Swine Fever disaster response center said feeding pigs with food waste is prohibited to prevent outbreaks. The farm’s waste was disposed of and the premises were disinfected.
The county government said these measures aim to protect biosecurity and safeguard the local pig farming industry.
