TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Canada Representative in Taipei Marie-Louise Hannan met with Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling (管碧玲) on Wednesday for talks on maritime cooperation.
The two sides exchanged views on maritime security, marine conservation, and the blue economy, according to the council. Kuan said the OAC will continue to deepen cooperation with Canada in maritime domain awareness, marine conservation, the blue economy, and other fields to promote a more open and science-based model of ocean governance.
She added that Taiwan and Canada are committed to sustainability and security in the Indo-Pacific and aim to form a stronger cooperative model for regional peace and prosperity.
The OAC said Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, released in 2022, affirms Taiwan’s democratic resilience and the importance of cross-strait peace and stability. The strategy also highlights sustainable ocean governance as a key pillar for deepening regional cooperation, the OAC said. As a result, Taiwan–Canada exchanges in the maritime field have grown more diverse and tangible.
Both countries hope to deepen collaboration in areas such as Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures designation, marine protected area management, and technological monitoring, the council said.
