TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 30-year-old woman safely delivered her baby on the roadside outside Yilan Elementary School on Tuesday, with help from school staff before emergency responders arrived.
The mother, surnamed Chen (陳), had returned from a field trip with her third-grade son when she experienced sudden abdominal pain, roughly two weeks before her expected due date. Her son ran to the nearby affiliated kindergarten for help, alerting staff members, according to LTN and Ettoday.
Lin Chiu-ping (林秋萍), director of the preschool, rushed to assist. She described Chen giving birth while “standing” outside the school gate.
Yilan Fire Bureau personnel arrived shortly afterward and confirmed the newborn was stable. They assisted with umbilical cord clamping, cleared the baby’s airways, and wrapped the infant for warmth, according to the bureau.
Both mother and child were transported to National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University Hospital in good condition. Lin said she was initially shocked but quickly acted to support mother and baby, grateful that teamwork ensured a safe delivery.
Paramedic Wu Chun-han (吳俊翰) described feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement when he learned that the baby had already been born. He said that training proved crucial in handling the situation, and seeing and hearing the newborn for the first time made him reflect on the miracle of life and the privilege of welcoming a new child safely.
Yilan Fire Bureau Director Hsu Sung-i (徐松奕) reminded pregnant women experiencing signs of labor, including water breaking, regular contractions, or bleeding, to call 119 immediately for emergency assistance.
