TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said Wednesday that Taiwan will oppose any unilateral moves by China to change regional peace and stability.
The president made the remarks before speaking at the 20th Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award ceremony, per CNA. He addressed media questions regarding China’s recent military harassment near Japan and South Korea.
Lai said China’s actions are inappropriate and reiterated that unilateral attempts to alter the regional status quo are unacceptable. He again called on Beijing to show responsibility for maintaining peace.
On the domestic front, Lai addressed the opposition’s boycott of the NT$1.25 trillion (US$40 billion) special defense bill. He acknowledged political competition as natural in a democracy but said Taiwan must remain united against external threats.
He warned that China’s pressure extends beyond Taiwan, prompting neighboring countries to strengthen defenses and deepen regional cooperation. Taiwan, he said, must protect its own security while contributing to broader regional stability.
Lai urged the legislature and opposition to handle the defense bill pragmatically. He also gave his condolences to victims of the 7.5 earthquake that hit Aomori, Japan on Monday.
