TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung City will collaborate with Wetlands Taiwan to host an event on Dec. 21 at Zuoying District's Chouchai Wetland Park.
CNA reported Tuesday the wetlands are a rare natural habitat in a city center and holds rich birdlife and ecological resources. Kaohsiung's public works bureau said the city teamed up with Wetlands Taiwan to put together guided walks, ecology tours, and other learning activities.
Wetlands Taiwan is a non-profit organization that works to protect Taiwan’s wetland ecology. The group studies local ecosystems, supports environmental programs, and helps coordinate efforts among conservation groups and communities.
The city's public works bureau said Chouchai Wetland has won national certification for wetland labeling and environmental education. The bureau noted that the wetland is an important stopover for migratory birds.
The bureau also said the city is working to protect wetlands, build up ecology education, and improve the site so it can offer a better natural space for locals. It invited visitors to stop by Chouchai Wetland Park on Dec. 21 to slow down, enjoy nature, and learn about the district's stories.
Kaohsiung has about 21 wetlands, making it the city with the largest wetlands area in Taiwan. Some sites such as Chouchai Wetland have been restored as ecological parks, but others still face habitat pressure and require conservation efforts, per Kaohsiung City Government.
