TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An F-16 pilot recently experienced a brief G-force–induced loss of consciousness (G-LOC) while conducting routine training at Taitung’s Chihhang Air Base, the Air Force said on Tuesday.
The training maneuver was immediately halted, and the pilot was escorted back by the lead aircraft for a safe landing, CNA reported. Follow-up measures will include continued strength training and risk assessments to maintain flight safety, according to the Air Force.
The Air Force Command said fighter jet operations require pilots to maintain optimal physical condition, concentration, and proper anti-G techniques. It pledged to continue implementing weight training and risk evaluations to reduce G-LOC risks.
G-LOC occurs when a fighter jet or aerobatic pilot is subjected to excessive and sustained positive G-forces, causing blood to pool in the lower body, per CNA. This reduces blood flow to the brain and can result in temporary loss of consciousness.
Taiwan expects 10 of the 66 F-16Vs purchased from the US to be completed by the end of this year. Flight tests for F-16Vs produced in the US will begin in January.
