TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s stock market rose on Monday as investors responded to growing expectations of a US Federal Reserve interest rate cut and adjusted fund portfolios ahead of year-end.
The Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index moved back above 28,000 points shortly after the opening, closing up 322.89 points at 28,303.78. Turnover totaled NT$423.8 billion (US$13.6), according to CNA and CTEE.
TSMC rose 2.4% to NT$1,495, supported by overflowing demand for its advanced chip packaging technology. Delta Electronics ended flat at NT$979, Foxconn increased 0.43% to NT$232, and MediaTek added 1.05% to NT$1,440.
Interest in TSMC’s chip-on-wafer-on-substrate (CoWoS) packaging also supported related equipment suppliers, as TSMC outsources part of its production while operating near full capacity. The technology stacks multiple chips, like processors and memory, closely together for faster data transfer, a key feature for high-performance artificial intelligence chips.
Calitech, Yankey Engineering, and Highlight Tech all reached their daily limit-ups. Ase Technology, which is now handling CoWoS processing for Google and AMD and may receive additional outsourced packaging orders, rose 2.81% to NT$237.5.
Memory-related stocks were supported by Morgan Stanley’s reiteration of its positive outlook for the sector. Winbond Electronics and Macronix International both hit limit-ups.
Winbond led the day’s trading volume at 311,000 lots, or 311 million shares, closing at NT$67.9 with over 78,000 unfilled buy orders. Macronix ended at NT$37.25 with 110,000 unfilled orders.
Nanya Technology rose 6.86% to NT$163.5. PSMC gained 3.8% to NT$34.15.
The rally extended to memory-packaging firm Walton Advanced Engineering, a Winbond subsidiary. It closed at a record NT$43.55, with 115,000 orders unfilled at the close.
Fiberglass stocks also remained active. Fiberglass is a key material for printed circuit boards and copper-clad laminates used in electronics manufacturing.
Taiwan Glass increased 4.8% to NT$38.2, recording the second highest turnover of the day. Fulltech Fiber Glass rose 1.92% to NT$85, while Nan Ya Plastics ended flat at NT$63.4.
Cathay Securities Investment Consulting manager Tsai Ming-han (蔡明翰) said that TSMC’s gains provided key support for the market. Fuh Hwa Taiwan Future 50 Active ETF fund manager Lu Hung-yu (呂宏宇) added that the higher likelihood of a rate cut has helped stabilize stocks and supported the market’s move above 28,000 points.
Tsai noted that demand tied to AI remains steady. Lu said while related stocks continue to attract attention, some funds have shifted to traditional and financial sectors.
With inflation easing and major central banks preparing for possible rate reductions, Lu expects the market’s overall positive trend to continue. He advised investors to monitor sectors with relatively lower valuations.
