TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – China put 10 Taiwanese fraud suspects, who were caught in Cambodia and Myanmar, on ferries to Kinmen without telling the authorities, reports said Thursday.
Two of the Taiwanese had served full prison terms in China, leading to their immediate release, the Liberty Times reported. Four were wanted for fraud and money laundering, but as they had already been sentenced they were transferred to a Kinmen prison.
Another four on Taiwan’s wanted list were questioned by prosecutors before being released, the report said. As the cases are still being investigated, there has been no decision on whether the individuals would have to face new trials and prison sentences in Taiwan.
As there is no direct judicial cooperation between Taiwan and China, it was the ferry operator who called the National Immigration Agency to tell them the 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. ships were carrying “special passengers,” the report said. By the time they arrived in Kinmen, police were waiting to register them.
