TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday urged South Korea to promptly fix its electronic arrival card after discovering the system incorrectly lists Taiwan as part of China.
The ministry said it had received multiple reports that the “place of departure” and “next destination” fields for South Korea’s e-arrival card are incorrectly labeling Taiwan as “China (Taiwan),” per CNA. It said the designation is inconsistent with the facts, causes confusion and inconvenience for travelers, and has left the public dissatisfied with what they see as an unfriendly practice by the South Korean government.
The ministry and the Taipei Mission in Korea have repeatedly raised the issue and pressed the South Korean government to correct the “wrongful” listing as soon as possible. However, the ministry said it is “deeply regrettable" that Seoul has yet to provide a direct response.
The ministry reiterated that Taiwan is a sovereign country and not subordinate to China. It said any attempt to distort Taiwan’s status constitutes bullying that harms international peace and stability.
It added that South Korea is a top destination for Taiwanese travelers and that Taiwan values its strong ties with the Korean people. It said the labeling not only misrepresents Taiwan but also causes unnecessary difficulties during entry procedures.
