TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Earlier this week, the Taiwan representative office in Japan made the statement on its official X account that “Taiwan is Taiwan, not Taiwan Province.”
On Friday, the Taiwan envoy to Japan, Lee Yi-yang (李逸洋), made an additional post on social media sharing the results of a recent survey that asked Japanese people about Taiwan. The survey found that 74.5% of respondents said they have a good impression of Taiwan, while 89% of respondents said they had a negative impression of China.
Both posts received a positive response form Japanese netizens, accumulating millions of views and thousands of likes, reported CNA. After clarifying that “Taiwan is Taiwan,” Lee said that he sincerely thanks the Japanese people for their understanding and for not viewing Taiwan and China as a single entity.
The initial post was made partly in response to a post made by the Chinese Ambassador to Japan, Wu Jianghao (吳江浩). The ambassador erroneously claimed that people across “Taiwan Province” were protesting recent remarks made by Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae about Taiwan.
