TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — New Taipei City said Tuesday it will roll out three weekend fairs to help people pick winter pouchong tea.
CNA reported Tuesday the fairs will start Saturday and run across three weekends. New Taipei Deputy Mayor Liu Ho-jan (劉和然) said the goal is to help shoppers try good tea and take home what they like.
Liu also praised pouchong tea farmer Cheng Tung-chuan (鄭冬泉) from Pinglin District for winning tea awards five times in a row. He noted that growing good tea is hard work and urged people to show support.
New Taipei's deputy mayor said the fairs will take place at Taipei's Hope Plaza on Saturday and at Pinglin Tea Museum on Dec. 6 and Dec. 13. Shoppers who pick up the award-winning tea before Dec. 20 can get an 8% discount.
New Taipei's agriculture bureau pointed out the city is Taiwan’s top pouchong tea area, turning out about 499 tonnes a year. The bureau added that Pinglin District alone puts out more than 288 tonnes a year.
Pouchong tea is a lightly oxidized oolong known for its clean taste and floral smell. The tea leaves are mainly grown in northern Taiwan, especially in New Taipei’s Pinglin District, which is the country’s top producer.
