TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Mobile’s AI-powered platform “AI Blue” for ocean knowledge was launched in Palau with the support of the Ocean Affairs Council, marking its first application abroad.
The company said that its team, Blue Trend, has partnered with the Palau International Coral Reef Center to run activities through March 2026, with divers uploading underwater footage from Palau’s waters to the platform. The data will be provided to the center for species mapping, ecological monitoring, and research, thereby helping to build a local marine life database, per CNA. Participants will have a chance to win a Garmin or Atmos dive watch.
The company noted that AI Blue, launched in 2021, is Taiwan’s first AI-driven ocean knowledge platform deployed in foreign waters. Powered by generative AI and large language models, it can deliver species information in 10 seconds with over 80% accuracy.
The platform combines over 21,000 records of marine species uploaded by 9,500 scholars and more than 1,700 species photos. It also includes over 100,000 environmental records and more than 700,000 related entries from government and research organizations.
The company added that the platform features data on rare species such as the Japanese butterfly ray and pygmy seahorse. It can also identify more than 80 marine species commonly found in Taiwan.
Chao Chien-shun (趙健舜), leader of Blue Trend, said the platform helps promote sustainable tourism, marine education, and scientific research. He hopes it will be adopted by government agencies, diving operators, and research institutions to support environmentally friendly and economically viable marine initiatives.
Taiwan Mobile President Lin Chih-chen (林之晨) said that overfishing has significantly reduced populations of more than half of marine species. The company provided cloud and database integration support to help develop the platform, which records marine life and builds a comprehensive species database.
