TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Tuesday said Taiwan will introduce new intelligence, reconnaissance, and unmanned capabilities while accelerating a layered and effective air-defense system called the T-Dome.
Presiding over a promotion ceremony for general officers, Lai said that with the expansion of authoritarianism and rapid technological development, global security faces increasingly complex challenges, per CNA. Taiwan must safeguard regional peace and stability through a steadfast commitment to democracy and the development of asymmetric warfare capabilities, he added.
He said the military has recently acquired advanced systems such as M1A2T tanks and the HIMARS long-range rocket system, and plans to introduce new reconnaissance platforms, unmanned vehicles, and other emerging combat capabilities. These systems will be integrated into a layered air-defense and interception network to speed up the creation of the T-Dome and enhance the depth and resilience of national defense.
The president said that alongside equipment modernization, tactics and operational concepts must also be refined. Improvements to information and communications systems will make overall combat power more mobile, flexible, and effective as a deterrent, he said.
Lai emphasized that, in the face of China’s evolving gray-zone tactics, he expects generals to guide their officers in analyzing threats and innovating tactical thinking. By leveraging Taiwan’s geography, they should build a more modern, reliable, and effective armed force to ensure national security and the well-being of the people, he said.
