TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Democratic Progressive Party is reportedly wary of United Microelectronics Corp. founder Robert Tsao (曹興誠) potentially forming a new faction within the party.
Following the failed recall campaign against Kuomintang legislators, several civil groups involved in the effort have shifted their focus to local-level politics, including borough chief and city council races. Tsao has encouraged “like-minded candidates” to run for office, per Tai Sounds.
Tsao publicly urged President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) to nominate DPP Legislator Puma Shen (沈伯洋) as the party’s candidate for Taipei mayor. Shen later clarified he has no intention of running in the foreseeable future, per Liberty Times.
Recall campaign insiders said that while Tsao’s partners in past efforts are willing to serve as aides, they are reluctant to become candidates themselves. DPP insiders suggested Tsao’s push to build political influence may stem from what recall groups perceive as weaknesses within the DPP.
A source close to Tsao said he worries the DPP may not move quickly enough to safeguard Taiwan from what he views as potential CCP influence through the KMT. The source stressed that Tsao is seeking cooperation with the DPP rather than trying to split the vote.
Some within the DPP said Tsao’s network could help broaden pro-Taiwan support in traditionally KMT-leaning areas. Still, they warned that the risk of vote-splitting and concerns over candidates receiving additional resources due to their ties with Tsao could create friction within the party.
