TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) said Monday the city will track down scooter riders who rode into Dongfeng Park and fine them, CNA reported.
DPP city councilors said during interpellation that the park sits next to Tong Fung Preschool and that many children play there. They said scooters have repeatedly cut through the park and accused the city of failing to intervene.
One parent told DPP City Councilor Chen Ya-hui (陳雅惠) that their child asked why scooters can be ridden in the park even though rules prohibit it. Chen said the question shows how the city has not kept the area safe for families.
Councilors urged the city to address the problem by installing stronger fences, adding barriers to block scooters, placing cameras, and increasing police cooperation. They said these measures would help restore the park as a safe public space.
Lu said scooter bans in parks are “common sense.” She said the city will use any videos showing license plates to follow up and issue fines, and she instructed police to tighten patrols and increase on-site monitoring.
She added that Dongfeng Park has seen an increase in visitors, indicating that management needs to improve. The city will launch a joint enforcement effort between the Construction Bureau and the police, consider installing additional cameras, and review pathway layouts, Lu said.
Taichung’s Construction Bureau Acting Director Chen Ta-tien (陳大田) said the city will fine violators under local rules and work with police to identify new camera locations. He said future park plans will include scooter-blocking designs to prevent the issue from recurring.
