TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — TSMC Chair and CEO C.C. Wei (魏哲家) and former Chair Mark Liu (劉德音) were jointly awarded the Robert N. Noyce Award on Friday, the Semiconductor Industry Association’s highest annual honor.
Established in 1990 to honor Intel co-founder and semiconductor pioneer Robert N. Noyce, the award recognizes individuals whose leadership has significantly shaped the global semiconductor industry, according to CTEE.
The ceremony took place in California, where both Wei and Liu attended in person. In their remarks, the leaders reflected on nearly three decades of collaboration, attributing the recognition to their shared dedication to semiconductor technology and the achievements of the TSMC team.
TSMC said the award holds special significance for the company.
After founder Morris Chang (張忠謀) received the honor in 2008, the recognition of both the current and former leaders highlights the chipmaker’s long-term contributions. These include advances in process technologies, global manufacturing, and the broader semiconductor ecosystem.
Over the past decade, TSMC has advanced multiple leading-edge nodes, including 7 nm, 5 nm, and 3 nm technologies, while expanding its global foundry operations.
Industry observers noted that the award comes at a critical time, as demand for AI computing rises and competition in advanced process technologies intensifies. The recognition highlights TSMC’s technological leadership in 2 nm and 3 nm nodes, as well as large-scale chip-on-wafer-on-substrate advanced packaging.
It also underscores the company’s essential role in maintaining stability in the global semiconductor supply chain. The honor is seen as both a recognition of TSMC’s achievements and an acknowledgment of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry on the international stage.
