TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The country’s first reported case of a drone operator smuggling contraband into a prison was reported in Hualien.
On Friday, Hualien Prison Warden Yang Chiu-hsiung (楊垂雄) reported the case of a 29-year-old man surnamed Luo (羅) who was arrested in mid-September after guards at Hualien prison heard noises while patrolling and spotted the drone. Monitoring the drone, the guards saw it drop two volleyballs filled with contraband including whiskey and betel nut, reported UDN.
The prison notified the Hualien Criminal Investigation Division, which formed a task force to track down Luo using nearby surveillance cameras.
Luo told police that an acquaintance asked him to provide the items for inmates. He reportedly bought parts and assembled the drone for about NT$60,000 (US$1,900).
Guards initially let the volleyballs alone to see who would retrieve the contraband items. During exercises, an inmate surnamed Chen (陳) was recorded retrieving the items.
Officers charged Lou with trespassing and for violating local civil aviation regulations in a no-fly zone, which may result in a fine of up to NT$1.5 million (US$48,000). Chen was also charged with possession of contraband items as an inmate.
