TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Japanese athlete who was in a car accident settled the case with help from Taichung police, who were later thanked by the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association with an appreciation certificate.
CNA reported Thursday the athlete visited Taichung's Qingshui District for the World Masters Games in May. On his return trip, he was driving a rented car when he was involved in a traffic accident with another vehicle.
Police said the case was complicated because the visitor was unfamiliar with Taiwan’s legal process and had trouble explaining the situation in Chinese. They said the athlete later contacted the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association for help.
The association then reached out to Taichung’s Wufeng Precinct. A sergeant of the precinct who speaks Japanese joined the talks, cleared up misunderstandings between both drivers, and guided them through the required paperwork.
The two sides eventually agreed on a settlement in October. The athlete later sent a letter to thank the officers for walking him through each step and making sure he understood what he needed to do.
On Nov 14, the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association followed up by sending a delegation to the precinct. The association presented an appreciation certificate to recognize the officers’ help.
Reciprocally, Lin Chung-hsing (林中興), chief of Wufeng Precinct, also gave the delegation a police mascot figure and a local specialty. Lin said they hope the exchange group and Taichung authorities can keep working closely together and build stronger ties going forward.
The Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association is Japan’s main office in Taiwan because the two sides do not have official diplomatic ties. It helps Japanese people living or traveling in Taiwan and works to keep both sides connected through culture, trade, and daily support.
