TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Chen Nien-Chin (陳念琴) claimed the gold medal in the women’s 65 kg category at the World Boxing Finals in India on Thursday, defeating England’s Dione Burman.
Chen established dominance early in the first round. She continued to control the fight in the second and successfully defended against Burman’s attacks in the third, ultimately securing the victory 4-1, according to LTN Sports.
She became the second Taiwanese boxer to win gold at the annual event, following last year’s champion Huang Hsiao-wen (黃筱雯).
After her victory, Chen told CNA that she had never faced Burman before. She had carefully studied videos of previous matches and conducted daily scouting during her preparation.
Reflecting on her achievement, Chen said she was “extremely happy.” “Winning the final competition of the year is a great honor.”
In other finals, Kuo Yi-hsuan (郭怡萱) lost 0-5 to Indian opponent Nikhat Zareen in the women’s 51 kg gold medal match. Paris Olympics bronze medalist Wu Shih-yi (吳詩儀) was defeated 1-4 by this year’s World Boxing Championships gold medalist Jaismine Lamboria in the 57 kg final.
Taiwan’s haul of one gold and two silver medals represents the nation’s best performance at the World Boxing Finals.
