TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 63-year-old woman drove out of a supermarket in Bade District on Thursday, lost focus, and plunged eight meters into a metro work pit but survived with only minor injuries.
CNA reported that the woman surnamed Liao (廖) drove out of the parking lot on Jieshou Road Section 2 and went straight into the pit, which is part of a Taoyuan metro project. Police said her alcohol test came back clean, and no one working inside the site was hurt.
Police added that Liao was alone in the car and showed no obvious external injuries when they reached her. They said the exact cause of the crash still needs to be determined, and investigators plan to review her driving path and the site’s safety setup.
Taoyuan’s fire department said firefighters had to climb down a ladder to reach the car because it was stuck deep inside the construction area. It said Liao was awake and able to move when they helped her climb back up.
Fire officials said she was later sent to Saint Paul’s Hospital, where doctors treated her for swelling on her right calf and soreness in her chest and waist. They said she is expected to recover soon.
