TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The first snow of the season fell early Thursday afternoon at Yushan Meteorological Station in Chiayi County, which sits at an altitude of 3,845 meters, Yahoo News reported.
The Central Weather Administration said snowfall was spotted at around 12 p.m. but the flakes quickly melted. There was also a brief flurry of snow at Paiyun Lodge, the final accommodation for hikers before summiting Yushan.
The Yushan measuring station recorded a temperature of 1.8 C and cloudy weather at 2 p.m.
Yushan National Park Headquarters management said snow on the mountain usually falls at the end of the year, but added that late November snowfall is also “normal.”
Yushan is the highest mountain in Taiwan at 3,952 meters above sea level. This makes it the tallest peak in Northeast Asia and the fourth-highest island mountain in the world.
