TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung intends to bolster its reputation as a “World Baseball City” with the announcement of a new 30,000-seat stadium tentatively named the Taichung Super Dome, World Baseball Network reported Wednesday.
It said Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) has revealed project plans for a 16.35-hectare site at the western end of the city. The proposed facility will be near Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium, a 20,000-seat outdoor venue that opened in 2006.
The Super Dome aims to build on this legacy by providing a multi-purpose stadium capable of hosting international tournaments, concerts, and other large-scale events. The project is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Taiwan’s baseball industry and attract global attention to Taichung.
The Chinese Taipei Baseball Association was quoted as saying: “Taichung has hosted numerous international tournaments following completion of the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium and won recognition from the WBSC (World Baseball Softball Confederation) as a ‘World Baseball City’ in 2013. A Taichung Super Dome will definitely better fulfill the title.”
The new stadium is expected to open by 2030 and will be developed through a public-private partnership. Lu emphasized the design would incorporate advanced features such as a retractable roof to make it an all-weather venue.
Funding estimates exceed NT$40 billion (about US$1.33 billion), with construction expected to create new economic opportunities and enhance the city’s infrastructure.
