TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Tuesday hosted Tuvaluan Prime Minister Feleti Teo for a state banquet in Taipei as the two countries signed a landmark treaty and additional cooperation agreements.
Lai praised Tuvalu for its support of Taiwan in international forums, including the UN General Assembly. The president highlighted the signing of key agreements during Teo’s visit, including a fisheries agreement and a sports exchange MOU.
Recalling his visit to Tuvalu, Lai said he was impressed by the country’s natural beauty and warm people. He visited the island nation last year as part of his tour of Pacific allies, per Reuters.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Teo called the banquet a meaningful milestone, emphasizing that the treaties establish a family-like bond. He also reaffirmed Tuvalu’s unwavering support for Taiwan’s international participation.
Taiwan maintains formal diplomatic relations with 11 countries including Belize, the Vatican, and Paraguay.
