TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Mpi Corp., a leader in semiconductor testing, is making a move to boost its high-frequency measurement capabilities with plans to acquire Canadian firm Focus Microwaves Inc.
The proposed 100% equity investment is valued at NT$870 million (US$28 million). It aims to strengthen Mpi's high-frequency testing and advanced semiconductor measurement capabilities, further consolidating its position in the probe card and testing equipment market, according to UDN Money and CTEE.
Focus Microwaves brings over 40 years of experience in specialized measurement technologies, Mpi said. The company plans to integrate Focus Microwaves into its advanced semiconductor test business unit, expanding its portfolio in radio-frequency, millimeter-wave, and high-power applications.
The deal also marks Mpi’s first expansion into Canada, complementing its existing subsidiaries in the US and other international markets. The move positions the company to tap into emerging markets, including 5G, 6G, silicon photonics, and advanced power devices.
The boom in AI chips, including graphics processing units and application-specific integrated circuits, has made testing more complex and time-consuming. Packaging and testing remain critical stages in semiconductor manufacturing, ensuring fabricated chips perform as intended, according to Pocket Securities.
Institutional investors noted that as a global leader in ASIC probe cards, or customized chips optimized for specific applications, Mpi has benefited from the overall growth of the ASIC market and continues to expand production capacity.
The company’s strong performance is reflected in October revenue of NT$1.16 billion, its third-highest monthly revenue on record. Cumulative revenue for the first ten months of the year reached NT$10.7 billion, a 31.38% increase from the same period last year, driven largely by robust probe card demand.
Analysts expect Mpi’s strong order flow and equipment shipments to support further profit growth in the coming months. The company’s growth momentum is expected to continue into 2027.
