TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s stock market closed slightly higher on Monday, supported by steadier trading on Wall Street as buying in technology shares picked up following recent price adjustments.
The Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index (TAIEX) gained 49.31 points to close at 27,447.31. Turnover totaled NT$524.4 billion (US$16.8 billion), according to CNA and CTEE.
TSMC opened firm and stayed in positive territory throughout the session, rising 1.05% to NT$1,445. Delta Electronics slipped 0.65% to NT$916, Foxconn declined 2.07% to NT$236, and MediaTek ended unchanged.
Stocks priced above NT$1,000 increased to 25. Aspeed Technology, the most expensive stock on the TAIEX, returned to the NT$6,000 range and closed 2.6% higher at NT$6,120.
Ezconn, a silicon photonics-related company, closed at the daily limit of NT$1,090. Auras Technology gained 3.54% to NT$1,025 after indicating its revenue next year could expand by more than 50%.
Memory stocks remained active as supplies stayed tight. Winbond Electronics reached the daily limit of NT$66.3 at the open, with heavy trading of 440,000 lots, or 440 million shares.
Nanya Technology rose 5.05% to NT$166.5 with more than 186,000 lots traded. PSMC increased 2.49% to NT$35, posting the day’s highest volume at 263,000 lots.
Lion Travel Service advanced 5.49% to NT$182.5, supported by strong earnings and continued momentum from an NT$10,000 cash handout initiative and upcoming holiday travel demand.
Cathay Securities Investment Consulting Deputy Manager Tsai Ming-han (蔡明翰) said the TAIEX's modest recovery on Monday came with reduced turnover, suggesting investors were not eager to buy at higher prices. He noted that the market faced selling pressure near the five-day moving average around 27,696 points, leading to a pullback and indicating that upward momentum may be limited.
Tsai said uncertainty about a US interest rate cut has reduced overall market liquidity. With the TAIEX already at a relatively elevated level, he said the market is likely to move within a narrow range in the near future.
