TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Pingtung’s first national government-funded social housing will provide 520 units across two 14-story towers and is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
Liberty Times reported Monday that the housing site sits in Pingtung City’s core area near the Pingtung Performing Arts Center. The buildings use green design, smart systems, and stronger quake safety measures to protect residents and improve accessibility.
According to UDN, the first floor will include a nursery and a children’s play zone. Nearby parks and walkways will also be arranged to help tie the blocks together.
Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi (周春米) said the county has been pushing big projects like the Pingtung HSR Special District and several science parks. Chou said affordable housing will attract younger people to stay in Pingtung and build their careers there.
The magistrate also pointed out that two more central social housing projects are about to break ground soon. She noted that together with the current housing site, they will add 873 rental units and build up a full support network for young residents and local industries.
The National Housing and Urban Regeneration Center said the housing site is meant to show how the government can roll out fairly priced housing and help low-income families settle down. The agency said social housing is slowly reshaping cities by giving people better and safer homes.
