TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Taiwanese night market was among several Taiwan-themed events featured at Berlin Freedom Week, which ran from Nov. 8–15.
The night market was held at Berlin’s Markthalle Neun, the city’s most iconic traditional market, CNA reported. Reinhard Butikofer, head of the German-Taiwan Civil Forum, visited the event and sampled Taiwanese dishes including beef noodles and bubble tea. Braised dishes and tofu pudding were also offered.
Butikofer said Josef Goldberger, head of the Saxony State Technology Office in Taiwan, first proposed the idea for a Taiwanese night market.
He said he hoped the event would help more Germans connect with and understand Taiwan through its cuisine, referencing the German saying, “Liebe geht durch den Magen” (“Love goes through the stomach”).
Other Taiwan-related events included a “Germany–Taiwan Transitional Justice Dialogue” and a screening of the first episode of the TV series “Zero Day Attack,” which aired in August.
During Berlin Freedom Week, former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and Ambassador-at-large Audrey Tang (唐鳳) spoke at the one-day Berlin Freedom Conference last Monday.
