TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of National Defense recently announced a tender for the Kinmen County Wuqiu Township Wharf Construction Project.
The NT$2.02 billion (US$66.1 million) plan is in partnership with the Ocean Affairs Council, and the county government will upgrade port facilities on Greater Qiu and Lesser Qiu and build Coast Guard facilities, per Liberty Times. Costs will be split among the three parties.
The ministry said work must be finished within 880 calendar days after a contract is signed, placing completion around spring or summer 2028.
Once completed, the wharves will make it easier to deploy Coast Guard vessels and maintain maritime security around Wuqiu. Transporting personnel and supplies to other outlying islands will also be easier.
From June to October, the ministry put the project out for public tender three times, but each call drew no bids.
In October, most of the Army’s 101st Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion, known as Sea Dragon frogmen, was relocated to Penghu for operational needs. The move aims to strengthen combat capabilities and bolster defense resilience, Defense Minister Wellington Koo (顧立雄) said.
