TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan City Government has started a new push to bring the Taiwanese language back into daily life through a family program filled with simple activities.
CNA reported Friday the program aims to get people to use Taiwanese at home and in daily conversation. The city government said it mixes language, culture, and everyday life so people can ease into using the language again.
The local government will also set up a series of activities to help people pick up the language in small steps, from simple talk at home to deeper cultural work. Officials said parents and kids are welcome to join these activities together.
The city's cultural bureau said online tools will provide individuals with guides for home practice. It said these tools should help more families build up daily habits and bring the language back into normal use.
Taiwan recognizes more than 20 languages, including Taiwanese Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, and 16 Indigenous tongues. Taiwanese Mandarin remains the most widely spoken, while the use of Taiwanese is decreasing among younger generations.
Taiwanese is more widely used in southern rather than northern Taiwan. Kaohsiung has about 1.19 million Taiwanese speakers while Tainan has about 948,000, per Storm Media.
