TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A proposal by Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) to reserve concert tickets for overseas travel agencies has met with criticism, reports said Friday.
Chen, whose ministry oversees the Tourism Administration, sees the plan as a way of bringing more tourists to Taiwan, per CNA. The country, and Kaohsiung in particular, has been promoting its concert economy, attracting large numbers of domestic and international visitors.
However, the minister’s suggestion met with a negative online reaction. Some complained that it was already too difficult obtaining tickets, so the government should not interfere to the benefit of visitors from overseas.
Chen reacted by saying he had heard all the opinions, and would respect “market mechanisms.” He said he would discuss the plan with the travel sector next year, but added it would not impact ticket sales to fans in Taiwan.
All the Tourism Administration would do, was to assist travel agencies in designing itineraries that included concerts and cultural destinations to attract more visitors from overseas, Chen said.
