TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – An F-16 pilot was barred from flying and was transferred to another department after he failed a breathalyzer test, the Air Force said Friday.
The captain named Lin (林) and his team had attended a meal outside Zhihang Air Base in Taitung with a senior officer, the Liberty Times reported. Before his next flight, a test showed a blood alcohol level of 0.04 milligrams per liter.
According to military regulations, he was barred from flying and had to submit to a second test within an hour. While the second test showed no more alcohol in his system, he was still grounded, the Air Force said.
Lin will no longer be allowed to fly and was transferred to another department, according to the Air Force. An officer who knew Lin had been drinking but failed to cancel his flight mission was also disciplined.
Lin also faces an investigation into the illicit use of an outside smartphone inside the base. The Air Force denied media reports that the incident included “flying under the influence,” as Lin had not been allowed to fly since testing positive for alcohol.
