TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) held talks Thursday with Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Representative Katayama Kazuyuki.
Cheng wrote on Facebook that they “exchanged views on Taiwan’s domestic developments, cross-strait relations, and Taiwan–Japan ties.”
According to Cheng, Katayama said Japan places great importance on Taiwan-Japan relations and has maintained close exchanges with the KMT. He also highlighted the 2013 Taiwan-Japan Fisheries Agreement, which allows Taiwanese and Japanese fishers to operate within a designated maritime zone without interference from each side’s law enforcement.
Katayama lauded the “mutual goodwill” between Taiwanese and Japanese and pledged to maintain close communication with Cheng. He also invited her to visit Japan in her capacity as KMT chair.
Cheng said she cited major cooperative achievements under former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九). The two sides said those milestones laid a foundation for close Taiwan-Japan ties and stressed that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are “essential to regional and global security.”
The KMT chair has met Taipei-based diplomats this week to discuss cross-strait ties and regional issues. She spoke with Singapore Trade Office Taipei Representative Yip Wei Kiat (葉偉傑) on Thursday and met American Institute in Taiwan Director Raymond Greene on Wednesday.
