TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology is scheduling a series of missile tests involving new weapons off the coast of Taitung, reports said Thursday.
The institute announced the tests would take place between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Nov. 19-20 and Nov. 26-27, the Liberty Times reported. The islands of Ludao and Lanyu were included in the restricted areas for the tests, with movements restricted up to a height of 30.5 kilometers.
The height and size of the area set apart for the tests gave rise to speculation that Chiang Kung or Strong Bow missiles were involved. The missile tests were only part of the institute’s program for the Jiupeng Base in Pingtung before the end of 2025, according to military sources.
In addition to missile tests at varying altitudes, tests were being prepared for Teng Yun and Albatross II drones to practice attacking targets at sea, and for the upgraded combat systems on the Navy’s Chengde frigate. The live-fire drills were needed to prove the successful integration of the Hua Yang vertical launch system with the radars and the Sea Sword II air defense missiles, the report said.
