TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Tropical Storm Fung-wong has become only the second storm to make landfall in Taiwan in November, weather experts said Wednesday.
After landing in Pingtung‘s Hengchun Peninsula at 7:40 p.m., the storm was downgraded to a tropical depression, per CNA. The only previous recorded example of a November storm making landfall in Taiwan was Typhoon Gilda, which crossed the country from east to west on Nov. 18, 1967.
Fung-wong is likely to reach the east coast and head out to sea in Taitung during the night, the Liberty Times reported. Despite its rapidly weakening force, the Central Weather Administration warned of torrential rain. Over the past two days, Suao in Yilan and the area in Hualien near the Mataian River has faced flooding.
Most parts of Taiwan are scheduled to open schools and offices as usual on Thursday, with updates provided by the Directorate General of Personnel Administration on their website.
