TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese in Japan gathered in Tokyo on Sunday to strengthen civic preparedness amid geopolitical tensions.
The symposium, co-hosted by the Su Beng Education Foundation and Watchout, coincided with Taiwan independence fighter Su Beng’s (史明) birthday, per Newtalk. The event featured guest speakers Keelung City Councilor Chang Chih-hao (張之豪) and Taipei City Councilor Miao Po-ya (苗博雅).
The event followed remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, who said Japan could act on a “survival-threatening situation” clause in a Taiwan emergency. Originally set for 60 attendees, it drew nearly 100.
Chang said civil defense abroad means more than drills or shelters. If war or cyberattacks break communication, he said, overseas Taiwanese can verify news, fight disinformation, and share Taiwan’s reality with the world.
Miao said global Taiwanese communities have expertise and networks that could support Taiwan’s democracy in a crisis. Citing Ukraine’s experience, she said, “It was the swift action of Ukrainians abroad that exposed the truth and rallied support.”
Su Beng Education Foundation Chair Huang Min-hung (黃敏紅) called for stronger personal ties. She said trust built in normal times becomes Taiwan’s most resilient defense.
