TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tropical Storm Fung-wong has caused flooding and utility outages, leaving 51 people injured and thousands displaced.
Fung-wong has triggered 349 incident reports nationwide, per CNA. In Yilan County, 25 locations remain flooded, with thousands of households without power or water as emergency crews race to restore services.
The Central Weather Administration said Yilan County saw torrential rain on Tuesday due to the tropical storm’s outer bands and a northeast monsoon. The National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction reported that from Monday to 8 a.m. on Wednesday, rainfall in the county totaled between 724.5 mm and 1,061.5 mm.
Landslide-prone areas include the mountainous regions of Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung counties, as well as Taipei and New Taipei. As of 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the Central Emergency Operation Center reported 99 flooding incidents nationwide, 76 of them in Yilan.
Yilan County Government said record-breaking rainfall left multiple areas in Suao and along the Dongshan River inundated. Authorities continue repair efforts and expect to compensate agricultural losses under the same cash-aid mechanism used after last year’s typhoons.

In Hualien’s Wanrong Township, Mingli Village suffered flooding but no casualties. The Mataian temporary bridge and Taiwan Railway services remain suspended, with alternate routes arranged.
Mataian River barrier lake remains under red alert. Nationwide, 56 landslide red alerts have been issued, including 21 in New Taipei and 35 in Yilan County.
Nationwide, 8,809 households experienced water outages, with 370 in Suao still awaiting restoration. Power outages affected 11,317 households nationwide, with 5,907 in Yilan still without electricity.
