TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ocean Affairs Council is working with Indonesia to tackle marine debris under a new pact with the Habibie Center, reports said Tuesday.
The government department concluded a memorandum of understanding with the Jakarta-based think tank to conduct joint research and advise policy changes to fight plastic pollution in Indonesia, per CNA. The two sides plan to publish results and offer their findings to the Indonesian government for consideration.
The agreement followed a visit to Indonesia by three Ocean Affairs Council officials from Nov. 4–7. The cooperation aims to reduce plastic and other pollution in Indonesian waters.
Indonesia has targeted a 70% cut in marine plastic by 2025, but studies estimate about 484,000 metric tons still leak into the ocean each year. Researchers have also tracked Indonesian plastic crossing the Indian Ocean and reaching South Africa in under a year.
Through the pact, Taiwan also plans to share circular-economy practices to support environmentally friendly policies in other countries.
