TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration on Tuesday issued a land warning for Tropical Storm Fung-wong.
As of 6 a.m., the storm’s center was 370 km southwest of Eluanbi, moving north-northeast at 12 kph, per CNA. Fung-wong has maximum sustained winds of 108 kph, with gusts of up to 136 kph and a storm radius of 220 km.
The CWA issued a land warning for Kaohsiung, Tainan, Taitung County, and Pingtung County. A sea warning is in place for the Bashi Channel, Dongsha Island, waters off southeast Taiwan, and the Taiwan Strait.
Forecaster Chu Mei-lin (朱美霖) said Fung-wong’s outer bands are interacting with a northeast monsoon, likely bringing heavy rain to the north and east. Rain is expected to intensify south of Yunlin on Tuesday night as the storm moves northward.
Fung-wong is forecast to approach on Wednesday afternoon or evening before moving offshore to the east by early Thursday morning. However, the storm’s path remains uncertain, with possible north-south shifts affecting landfall between Taiwan’s western coast and the Hengchun Peninsula.
Strong winds are expected along coastal areas. Gusts of up to Beaufort scale 12 have been recorded in Pingtung, the Hengchun Peninsula, and Orchid Island, and scale 10 winds have been reported in Keelung and northern Yilan.
The CWA issued an extreme torrential rain alert for Yilan County and a torrential rain warning for Taipei, New Taipei, Hualien, and Taitung counties. An extremely heavy rain advisory is in effect for Taoyuan and Pingtung, while Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung, Nantou County, and Kaohsiung are under a heavy rain alert.
