TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration on Monday issued a sea warning for Typhoon Fung-wong, with landfall expected on Wednesday afternoon.
As Fung-wong approaches Taiwan, the CWA issued the warning at 5:30 p.m., announcing the first alert zones, per TVBS. Areas covered include the waters around Dongsha Island, the Bashi Channel, and the southern Taiwan Strait, where vessels navigating or operating should exercise heightened caution.
The 26th tropical storm of the year has strengthened over the past three hours. It is currently located 490 km south-southwest of Eluanbi, moving north-northwest at 13 kph, with intensity expected to rise slightly.
Central Weather Administration forecaster Chang Chun-yao (張竣堯) told TVBS News that Fung-wong was originally expected to make landfall late Wednesday night to Thursday. The revised path has moved landfall up to Wednesday afternoon, most likely in central and southern Taiwan, south of Taichung.
The CWA warned that on Tuesday, the typhoon’s outer bands, combined with the northeast monsoon, will bring showers and the possibility of heavy or torrential rain to eastern Taiwan, the Greater Taipei area, Keelung’s northern coast, and the Hengchun Peninsula. The east and the mountainous areas of Greater Taipei are especially at risk of localized torrential rainfall.
Other areas, including Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, may see brief localized showers. The north and northeast will feel cooler, with other areas cooler in the mornings and evenings.
Large waves may occur along the northern coast of Keelung, eastern Taiwan, the central-southern coast, Hengchun Peninsula, and Penghu and Kinmen. Mariners and residents in these areas are advised to remain alert.
