TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — With Typhoon Fung-Wong nearing Taiwan later this week, Hualien County announced immediate preparations, especially for residents of Guangfu Township.
Guangfu Township is still recovering from serious flooding after the Mataian barrier lake overflowed in September, causing major damage and 19 deaths. Anticipating the possibility of more flooding, Hualien began distributing emergency evacuation kits to township residents, per CNA.
While the precise route of the typhoon is uncertain, there is a high risk of additional flooding and the potential for new barrier lakes to form in Hualien’s mountainous interior. In October, a large barrier lake appeared overnight near the entrance to Taroko National Park.
To help ensure residents’ safety, six villages in Guangfu are being supplied with emergency kits by the local fire department. The Hualien County Government reportedly spent NT$65 million (US$2 million) to purchase 135,000 kits containing food, water, hygiene products, flashlights, safety guides, and other essentials in a daypack.
Authorities warned the public to stay aware of weather and local conditions as the storm approaches. Hualien also recommends that residents prepare a three-day supply of food, water, and essential medication before the typhoon arrives.
The public should avoid high-risk areas like mountain roads, rivers, and streams during typhoons. If an evacuation order is issued, residents are asked to follow instructions and head to designated evacuation sites and shelters immediately.
