TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A group of 16 rock climbers ran into trouble below Elephant Trunk Tunnel on the old section of Suhua Highway on Sunday, leaving one woman dead after she was swept into the ocean by powerful waves, per CNA.
The Hualien County Fire Department said it received a report around 11 a.m. that a person had been pulled off the beach by a wave below the tunnel. A search-and-rescue team was dispatched, including four vehicles, 12 first responders, and a drone.
The missing woman, surnamed Chang (張), was reported to be in her 60s. Because of poor visibility along the shoreline, rescuers requested Coast Guard support, and a drone was deployed for an aerial search.
After the drone located the victim, the National Airborne Service Corps sent a helicopter to conduct a hoist operation. The helicopter recovered the body at 12:46 p.m., landing at Dexing Baseball Stadium. The woman showed no signs of life.
Four other members of the group were stranded about 50 meters below the old Suhua Highway on the beach. First responders descended with ropes, pulled them back up to the road, and administered first aid.
Authorities warned the public to avoid coastal rock climbing during periods of strong waves and changing weather.
