TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The launch of the first of eight Formosat-8 satellites has been postponed due to the US government shutdown, reports said Saturday.
The launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California had initially been scheduled for Wednesday, and then delayed by one day to Nov. 12. However, the Taiwan Space Agency said Saturday there had been a new postponement, with no new date fixed, per CNA.
The Chi Po-lin (齊柏林) Satellite, named after the late director of documentaries showing Taiwan from the air, was the first in a series of eight satellites with 84% of its parts made in Taiwan. The SpaceX Transporter-15 rocket was to have carried the satellite to a sun-synchronous orbit 561 kilometers from Earth.
The agency said the latest delay was likely caused by the US Federal Aviation Administration having to close some departments due to the budget stalemate in Congress. As a result, satellite launches between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. local time were banned beginning Tuesday.
Launch time for the Transporter-15 had been set at 10:18 a.m., but due to orbiting requirements, it was impossible to move the launch to another time slot, the agency said.
