TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – New Taipei is considering proposals to expand the popular annual Christmasland event to districts outside Banqiao, reports said Friday.
Last year’s version attracted 7.6 million visitors to the area near Banqiao Railway Station and New Taipei City Hall, according to Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜). However, the event featuring music performances and light displays also drew complaints from nearby residents about traffic chaos, per CNA.
This led to online discussions about an end to Christmasland after this year’s edition. New Taipei City Council members on Friday described the suggestion as a “false issue” because most of the traffic problems had been resolved over the past two or three years, except for the Banqiao Railway Station area.
While some councilors said the residents of Banqiao loved Christmasland, others proposed a move to other districts in New Taipei to let them share the economic and cultural benefits of the event.
Hou replied that his administration had already discussed similar ideas. The mayor suggested Tamsui and the New Taipei City Art Museum area in Yingge as potential locations.
This year’s edition of Christmasland lasts from Nov. 14 to Dec. 28, with “circus carnival” as its main theme.
