TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A fire broke out Wednesday night at Taoyuan’s Nanmen Market, one of the city’s oldest traditional markets, affecting roughly two-thirds of the market and several hundred stalls.
The Taoyuan City Fire Department received a report of the fire at 9:35 p.m. and contained it around 1:20 a.m., with an estimated 3,000 square meters affected. Firefighters responded with 79 personnel, 35 firetrucks, and two ambulances, evacuating an 83-year-old man without injury, according to CNA.
Mayor Chang San-cheng (張善政) said the fire affected indoor and outdoor stalls. A small section at the rear remained unaffected and opened on Thursday.
The city’s Department of Economic Development convened an emergency meeting with relevant departments to assess damages, review the impact on businesses, and discuss follow-up measures. It outlined several ways to assist vendors.
Those unable to operate in the short term will be temporarily exempted from paying rent, and the city is preparing subsidy plans. In the meantime, arrangements will be made for vendors to operate at alternative locations.
On fire safety, the market’s interior underwent an inspection in mid-October, which found no issues. Authorities noted that many outdoor stalls rely on electrical wiring extended from the interior and are reviewing these connections to determine whether additional preventive measures are needed.
