TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Meteorologist Wu De-rong (吳德榮) predicted on Thursday that a newly formed tropical storm could bring rain to Taiwan early next week.
The Central Weather Administration announced that a tropical depression near Guam had strengthened into Tropical Storm Fung-wong, becoming this year’s 26th tropical storm, per CNA. It is forecast to move west-northwest toward the northern Philippines.
Wu said Fung-wong is expected to turn north after passing over northern Luzon and head toward Taiwan. Although it may weaken after crossing Luzon, he said it could still bring winds and torrential rain.
He forecast that on Monday, Fung-wong’s outer bands will begin affecting Taiwan, increasing rainfall in the north and east. Several regions could see winds and rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.
By Wednesday morning, the storm is expected to be southwest of Taiwan. It is expected to weaken and move away by Thursday afternoon.
