TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Russian and Chinese prime ministers recently issued a joint communique reiterating their commitment to Beijing’s “one China principle,” prompting Taiwan’s foreign ministry to register its discontent on Wednesday.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang welcomed Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to Beijing on Monday and Tuesday, when the pair signed the “Joint Communique of the 30th Regular Meeting of the Chinese and Russian Prime Ministers,” per CNA. In the document, the Russian side voiced its support for Chinese “national unification,” meaning the Chinese Communist Party’s annexation of Taiwan.
Protesting in a press release, Taiwan’s foreign ministry noted Russia’s adherence to the CCP’s party line on Taiwan, including Beijing’s “one China principle” and distortions of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758.
The foreign ministry said the resolution does not grant the People’s Republic of China the right to represent Taiwan at the UN and called on the rest of the world to recognize Beijing’s lawfare for what it is — an aggressive attempt to undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
The ministry added that Taiwan is a sovereign democracy and not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China, which has never ruled over Taiwan.
