TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tropical depression TD29 is likely to strengthen into Tropical Storm Fung-wong and approach Taiwan next week, reports said Tuesday.
At present, the system is located east of the Philippines, near Guam, and moving west-northwest at about 8 kilometers per hour, the Central Weather Administration said. While it is too early to tell which direction it will take after being named on Wednesday, Taiwan is a strong possibility, the Liberty Times reported.
Due to favorable conditions, the storm could intensify into a typhoon relatively quickly, according to the TyTech Taiwan Weather Express Facebook page. When it reaches a high-pressure area on Nov. 10, it is likely to turn north, though several days of observation are still needed to determine whether the shift takes it west or east of Taiwan.
The page said the most likely scenarios are a track north along Taiwan’s east coast or a direct landfall. A move up the west coast into the Taiwan Strait is less likely, with paths toward China or Vietnam least likely.
