TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — About 40 residents from Pingtung County’s Fangshan Township traveled to the Legislative Yuan in Taipei to protest an onshore wind turbine project on Thursday.
CNA reported that Pingsheng Wind Power plans to build onshore turbines in Fangshan Township. Local residents have pushed back, saying the project was rushed and ignored their concerns.
Lawmaker Su Ching-chuan (蘇清泉) has urged the government to listen to local voices and not push the plan through. Su said the civic group, led by Wang Kuang-sheng (王光盛), supports green energy but fears low-frequency noise and bird migration risks.
Wang said the company’s earlier meetings invited people from distant towns, leaving those most affected in the dark. Nearby residents only found out after construction on turbine bases began along the Fenggang River, he said.
Pingtung County Government said the project is still under environmental review. The government has already fined Pingsheng Wind Power NT$60,000 (US$1,949) for violating regional planning rules and said monitoring will continue.
Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming (彭啓明) earlier said the government does not “encourage” onshore wind turbines.
